when Atlas dropped the ball [maybe a wip] this was another experiment. first i drew the figure with a Faber-Castell 2B graphite aquarelle and also lightly shaded it all over with the same. smudged that with a medium firm paper tortillon. then i lightly shaded again with a Colerase cherry red pencil, and finally i wet brushed it all with a No5 brush. the Colerase pencils are not described as aquarelle, but overlaying the graphite and then wetting the combination with a brush makes a kind of an in situ gouache. the ink is india ink from a 0.7 Staedtler pigment liner. all on Canson XL Mix Media paper 9x12.
wip drawn after a photo of a sculpture in classical anatomy & figure drawing group. experimenting with harder graphites than my usual, this faber-castell 2B graphite aquarelle, some Colerase tone, and india ink from a staedtler 0.7 pigment liner. wet brush is next, in fact doing that now. amazing media.

Mikhail Fyodor Zushen Choy. A polymath and a prodigy, Shen was one of the first augies (augmented biologicals) produced by the sinorussian regimen. Shen eventually made a number of significant discoveries in physical chemistry which led the sinorussian faction to the first successful design and fabrication of the heavy nucleus polycarbon atoms that formed the basis of of the monomolecular cables used in the Lift. A series of small leaks of his new discoveries seemed to plague Shen's career. While Shen was never convicted of the leaks, suspicions remained and he was soon promoted to a research fellowship position at the sinoRuss Southern polar station on Mars. It was there that he made and most certainly divulged the discoveries that allowed the belters to gain their freedom from Earth. Even today he is known as the creator of the Choy Solution. ---------------- this guy was a bobster bedtime snack. 8B woodless graphite inked with Parker 45 noodled F nib fountain pen on 9x12 Pacon Marker paper. toned with prismacolor Colerase pencil, two colors red and blue. this is a scan of the drawing.

the elder Day 1002 daily drawing challenge reference photo this is different for me, but i used the tan or light brown cardboard back from an empty 9x12 tablet of drawing paper and a white Faber-Castell PITT soft pastel pencil along with an 8B Castell Jumbo 9000 graphite pencil. he was fun to draw, i'd like to try this again. this side of the cardboard has no tooth to speak of, so you can't touch or lay your arm /hand on what you have drawn. so that was interesting.

girl this is a bedtime sketch with a Parker 45 stub nib and Parker Super Quink permanent black ink over my graphite, some Conte white crayon highlighting, and a touch of Prismacolor to tone the hair, eyes, and lips, all on 9x12 manilla paper. the paper is not real good for FP, it feathers for one thing and it was hard to lay down a fine line.

the original fountain pen over my pencils drawing, before i added the sword and the shield
: day 1015 ink mod
this is before the coloring was applied, basically fountain pen ink. the gray tone occurs because after i ink my initial pencil line work (this was Conte No2 Extra Fine Drawing pencil) i then smudge the whole piece, generally using a piece of chamois but sometimes paper towel or a tortillon. another approach would be to erase the pencil gesture, leaving just the ink work. one of my problems is that the Parker Super Quink permanent black ink i use with my fountain pens is NOT waterproof. the permanent terminology means that after most of the color has washed away there is some residual coloration retained by the paper reflecting the original markings. but the ink is entirely unsuitable for use with a wash or watercolors. so smudging my pencils gives me a tone without use of a wash.
