Wow. New discovery all over again. Eagle Charco pencils and Eberhard Faber Koal-Black charcoal pencils. I drew a gesture sketch with a Wolff's B Carbon Drawing pencil and then used a 4B Koal-Blak to accentuate the linework. Colored this a bit with some dayglo pencils. All on yellow construction paper (Pacon) 9x12. this is a scan of the drawing

Elk Day 1024 Daily Drawing Challenge reference photo more different. this is a bedtime sketch i finished today, done with Conte No3 Black Drawing pencil and charcoal pencils in 4B and 6B, and pastels, PITT pastel pencils in browns and black and some gray sticks, touch of greens. all on a 9x12 sheet of blue cardstock. eye catchlights are Bic witeout correction fluid. this is my first pastel piece in quite a long time and it was fun. kind of cartoonish but that's what i do. lol.

Fashion Jester Day 1025 daily drawing challenge reference photo this is a high res scan, previously posted a cellphone photo. A bedtime drawing. I drew the body with 2B Castells Jumbo 9000 graphite and inked it with a Waterman F nib fountain pen and Parker Super Quink permanent black ink. Then i colored the outfit with Sanford's Design Ebony pencil and a Prismacolor scarlet red pencil and a charcoal pencil, smudged with a tortillon. Then i added her face with a Wolff's BB Carbon pencil, inked that with the Waterman FP, and used the scarlet red Prismacolor pencil again. Finally blended it all with a Prismacolor "Blender" pencil and a piece of chamois. the whites of her eyes are done with Conte White Extra Fine Drawing pencil. Added the border motif with Prismacolor pencils. this is on the "wrong side" of a 9x12 sheet of Pacon Art1st Drawing paper. some of these tools i haven't used in a long time so it's like rediscovering joy. one of our friends observed that nobody could have legs as long as those on the model. i am just glad i got them to fit on the paper. ;-)

Tortoise study day 1027 daily drawing challenge reference photo this was a bedtime experiment. i am playing with this gray construction paper, 9x12 Pacon Art1st. but what i tried here was to use Conte No3 Extra Fine Drawing pencil in black and some Conte No3 white drawing crayon followed with PITT pastel pencils in browns. the conte and the pastels are quite different, the conte being waxy, so applying pastels over them doesn't smear them and they reduce the pastel's coverage, how much sticks. smudged it all with a tortillon and then chamois. finally redrew most of my outlines with a Koal-Black charcoal pencil, and a touch to the deeper shadows. the catchlights are homage to my comic book form.

Colonel Sansom was the commander of a five chopper squadron of Hornets, two man attack helicopters. The military life wasn't easy, but the meds were good and the psychotropics almost suppressed the realities of the job. Sansom had some of the latest nanonet technology wired throughout her cortex and when she was in the bird, she became part of it. As squadron commander Sansom was also virtually a part of the other birds and their crews. One big happy predator and a talented hunter-killer. day 1029 and day 347 daily drawing challenge reference photos. playing with my ink drawing of the figure for day 1029 in photoshop. the choppers are my version of the day 347 reference. used some slightly modified clipart for her insignia. i was thinking it might make a good opening panel for a graphic story about the colonel and the choppers and the world they live in.

cheetah day 1056 daily drawing challenge reference photo this is a No.2 Conte Extra Fine Drawing Pencil sketch inked with a Staedtler 0.7 pigment liner and india ink on Canson XL Recycled Multimedia Paper 9x12. it is colored using mixtures and dilutions from a three color palette, scarlet red, primrose yellow, and indigo blue, along with black and white Speedball Super Pigmented Acrylic inks. most of the ink was applied using a round No3 brush except the background which was done with a No7 round. (obviously by mixing these 3 colors you can easily obtain any of 6 nominal primaries, and you have black and white to darken or lighten any of the resulting shades.) so i have a couple of other pieces i was thinking to ink in similar fashion, so i will have to think about that a bit. the "Multimedia Paper" isn't the best for water based coloring. being decent quality paper it does go back to pretty flat once dry, so that's good, but it isn't remarkably better than the "Drawing Paper" for the ink. i think it is also somewhat whiter/brighter. been a LONG time since i have done any colors with inking, this second piece was a good wakeup. i more prefer mylar film, put the linework on one side, color it on the other. wasn't sure i was going to color this, and the colored ink has dulled my blacks.

Dink D. Dawg [first step, wip] Day 1073 Daily Drawing Challenge reference photo this is a quickie (30 mins +-) bedtime gesture sketch, 2B 0.5mm mech pencil on Canson recycled XL drawing paper 9x12. fwiw, the way i do these is put a single sheet of the paper on a clipboard, then i hold the clipboard in my left hand and the pencil in my right, and i turn the clipboard frequently. i really like the gesture style/method that i see JPL of the DDC group and some others use, where the gesture kind of homes in on the reference by these successive approximations, and in some ways i do something perhaps similar except that i am also swapping pencil and eraser as i go along, so this doggie sketch (now that could be taken at least two ways. lol.) is what is left. the first few lines were the dog's head; i drew an american football shape, went from there. another thing i do is to look at the reference photo particularly in respect to where the largest shapes fit within that frame and how the object divides the framed area. so ok, the dog's head, what i drew first as a football shape. well one end of the football (the left end) is just about a third of the way down the sheet/frame/photo and just about a third of the way across from the left side. i do not use a grid, just eyeball the positions. i don't see a grid as cheating, use whatever tools work for you! but for me i would have the fear of becoming dependent on the grid, junkie mentality ;-) finally, i frequently don't know where i am going with a piece. but usually it now starts with a sketch kind of like this, and i think about what is next then. that way we kind of all find out what i am going to draw at the same time. ;-)

(i do not consider grids or straightedges/rulers, triangles and french curves to be in any way a negative thing. they are all legitimate drawing tools and aids. i'd even go so far as to encourage their use, especially if you're trying to get a pretty accurate result.) more watercolor coming up. lol.

Getting my Kicks. so here i was messing around with these hatching brushes that i made to use in photoshop, just a quick try em out deal "proof of concept" on my drawing of the martial arts lady from day 904 daily drawing challenge. i did not try to maximize the customizations that are possible with the brushes when i did this quickie drawing. the next thing, and pretty much the last part of making a set of crosshatch brushes to share, is to write up the documentation for the brushes: how to adjust them to your liking, what settings change what aspect of their appearance and so forth. if you like crosshatching you will probably like these brushes.

Blue Wolf, Yellow Moon (final) Day 946 Daily Drawing Challenge reference photo this is the final for the drawing i posted earlier. darkened some tones using 6B and 8B Castells Jumbo 9000 graphite pencils, especially the rear legs and few other smaller areas. also changed the eyes, for one made the iris of both eyes the same size and darkened the outline. otherwise, another bedtime snack. this was done in Castells Jumbo 9000 HB graphite and then with 2B 0.5mm mech pencil, inked with a Waterman M nib fountain pen and colored with Colerase pencils. wulfie was fun to draw.

Waterman M nib fountain pen with Parker Super Quink permanent black ink on 9x12 Daler & Rowney Drawing paper. kind of want to color this but my boss, er i meant wife, says "leave it alone" and "draw another picture if you want to color something". i am really blessed to have a partner who encourages my art. thank you baby G! <3

Pug Dog [ink] Day 950 Daily Drawing Challenge reference photo yet another bobster bedtime snack. three different fountain pens (my carry kit. lol.) were used in the commission of this crime drawn on Daler & Rowney 9x12 Drawing paper in Parker Super Quink permanent black ink. first ink was done with a Waterman M nib fountain pen, followed by line differentiation using a Parker 45 M stub fountain pen and then some fine hatching was done with a Parker 45 noodled F nib fountain pen. this was a really entertaining challenge for me not only because the dog is cute and i like dogs, but also because i don't draw many dogs so i don't have the "feel" for how the dog should be rendered best. and the reference photo is fairly small so i had to guess at some of the details. nonetheless i sure enjoyed drawing this one! once again i was considering applying some color pencil but my partner says leave it black and white, so black and white it is. hope you like it!

Cuban Trogon, or tocororo, the national bird of Cuba (wip) Day 956 Daily Drawing Challenge reference photo this is a newly revisited rejuvenated Parker Arrow (?) EF nib (?) fountain pen over 4B Castells Jumbo 9000 graphite pencil sketch on 9x12 Daler & Rowney Drawing paper. i purchased the paper at my local Walmart for about $3 a pad, and it is really nice drawing paper; however this wally world has gone ghetto (it is only about a year old) so they haven't restocked this paper and some others in a month or more. they also dropped some coffee brands (hey, if it sells out quick why restock it? just stock the slower moving brands right?) and quite a few other products just leaving the shelves empty. kind of sad situation. bah.

Day 957 Daily Drawing Challenge reference photo another bobster bedtime snack, started in a parking lot earlier. this is 4B Castells Jumbo 9000 graphite pencil on Pacon Art1st Marker paper 9x12. this is a really smooth paper with very little tooth so it doesn't take up much of the graphite. he was fun to draw, harder to get the drawing looking like him than it might seem. not sure what if anything else i might do to this one. but of course fountain pen ink comes to mind. lol.
