This is a drawing in pencil and pastels on heavy paper, 9x12 in. My intention was to focus particularly on the hands and arms on the folds of the fabric, their position displaying almost extreme modesty. So the head and facial features are an abstraction. But consider if you will how the hands and the arms, folded as they are, might be a visual metaphor for the pose of a praying mantis. So now what does the shape of her head and features speak to? Maybe not who, but WHAT is this creature?
